In 2022, nearly 7,000 people died from opioid-related overdose in California. San Francisco is particularly hard hit, with overdose deaths reaching unprecedented levels.

Even though 2.7 million Californians met the criteria for substance use disorder last year, only 10% received any form of treatment. This state mirrors a troubling national trend, where over 83,000 lives are lost by opioid-related overdoses annually, with fentanyl involved in more than 90% of these cases.

California Drug Abuse Statistics

In the first nine months of 2023, 692 people died of overdoses in Northern California alone, surpassing the total number of overdose deaths for the entire year of 2022. For the first time since 2023, fentanyl has overtaken methamphetamine as the leading cause of these fatal overdoses.

Among the state’s younger population, individuals aged 18 to 25 in California are 18.24% more likely to use drugs than their peers across the nation. This trend contributes to California having the highest number of drug overdose deaths in the country, with 6,198 fatalities reported accounting for 8.81% of all drug overdose deaths nationwide.

As well, California records the highest number of alcohol-related deaths in the nation. Excessive alcohol deaths in California skyrocketed by 40% between 2015 and 2019. Men account for nearly 70% of these fatalities.

These rehabs provide an immersive environment where patients live on-site throughout their treatment, lasting from a few weeks to several months. This setting allows for a recovery environment away from everyday triggers and stresses.

771 rehabs in California offer an inclusive approach to recovery, including detoxification, medical treatment, individual and group therapy, and support for developing healthier coping mechanisms and life skills. 434 of these facilities also provide inpatient drug detox services. Outpatient Rehabs in California

Outpatient rehabs are treatment programs designed for individuals needing support for addiction or certain mental health conditions. Unlike inpatient rehabs, where individuals reside, outpatient rehabs allow patients to live at home while participating in a structured treatment schedule.

1,043 drug rehabs in California offer outpatient rehab, which allows you to receive treatment while keeping your daily responsibilities, such as work, school, or family commitments. Outpatient rehabs often provide different levels of care, such as intensive outpatient programs for those transitioning from inpatient facilities.

You can find 621 intensive rehab programs in California, 245 for outpatient detox for cravings and withdrawal symptoms management and 382 facilities for methadone maintenance treatment.

Alcohol Rehabs in California

In California, alcohol addiction significantly contributes to the extensive issue of substance use disorders. Alcohol is involved in each of the four most commonly identified combinations of substance use disorders.

Among these, the mix of alcohol and marijuana use disorders appears most frequently yet receives the least treatment. Addressing this co-occurrence requires distinctive therapeutic strategies beyond those used for treating alcohol addiction alone.

There are 868 rehabilitation facilities in California offering interventions for both alcohol and drug addiction, with 709 of these institutions treating alcohol use disorders exclusively. 516 alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers in California can manage the medical detoxification from alcohol, ensuring a safer withdrawal phase.

Mental Health and Drug Treatment Centers in California

Addiction often intertwines with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. California’s Mental Health Parity Act (MHPA), Senate Bill 855, requires insurers to treat mental and physical health conditions equally.

The law went into effect in 2021 and aims to prevent insurers from denying mental health and substance abuse treatments for arbitrary or cost reasons. As a result, 870 drug treatment centers in California offer treatment for co-occurring disorders. Treatment usually involves specialized therapies, medication management, and support groups.

Private Health Insurance for Drug Treatment Centers California

1,099 rehabs in California accept private health insurance to cover various services provided by drug treatment centers, offering individuals resources for financing addiction recovery. However, understanding how to maximize these benefits requires some knowledge and planning, given the differences in coverage among plans.

The extent of rehab coverage largely depends on the policy’s specifics. Insurers have networks of preferred providers, and choosing an in-network treatment center can lower out-of-pocket expenses.

Medicaid/Medicare for Drug Rehabs California

Medicaid, California’s version of Medi-Cal, provides significant coverage for substance abuse treatment. This includes inpatient and outpatient care, counseling, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). In California, 701 facilities accept Medicaid.

Medicare offers limited coverage for substance abuse treatment. Primarily, it covers medically supervised detoxification and some outpatient mental health services that may include substance abuse counseling. There are 431 rehabilitation facilities in California accepting Medicare.

Federal and state parity laws require most health insurance plans to provide coverage for mental health and substance abuse treatment services in the same way they cover physical health services.

Californiaโ€™s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, provides health coverage to low-income individuals and families. Under the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System (DMC-ODS), Medi-Cal covers various substance use disorder services, including detox, residential treatment, outpatient services, and more.
