Pain medications tend to interact with similar medicine when used simultaneously or within the same dosing schedule. Lortab interactions with other opioids, as well as other drugs and substances, is also known. Some Lortab drug interactions may lead to an increase in the severity of regular side effects, or even cause completely new, which could vary from mild to fatal. For this reason, it is essential to stay in the loop about which drugs and substances should be avoided when placed on tablet or Lortab Elixir dosage.
Table of Contents
Lortab Interactions With Painkillers
Percocet And Lortab
The oxycodone content in Percocet can cause a major interaction when the drug is used together. This interaction can lead to severe side effects such as a coma or respiratory depression. Experiencing Lortab high is also possible from this combination. In any situation where Percocet and Lortab have to be used concurrently, reduce the regular dosage by 20 to 30%. Also, consider reducing the dosage for Percocet by half or two-thirds.
Lortab And Darvocet
Using Darvocet and Lortab at the same time can lead to a major drug interaction. It is strongly inadvisable due to the hydrocodone content. Using opioids concurrently with CNS depressants can lead to sedation, hypotension, respiratory depression, coma or death.
Lortab And Vicodin
Lortab and Vicodin have the same base components – hydrocodone and acetaminophen. They perform similar functions, so concurrent use is unnecessary. Using both drugs together increases the likelihood and severity of Lortab side effects. These side effects may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, confusion, and anxiety. Additionally, using both drugs can increase the chances of dependency as the body starts to adjust to the high doses. At that point, the patient will have to be registered in a rehab center to recover.
Lortab And Suboxone
Suboxone contains buprenorphine and naloxone as active ingredients, both of which are opiate antagonists (buprenorphine is also an opiate agonist). Naloxone is a pharmacological opposite to hydrocodone, so the implication of using both drugs is that the naloxone in Suboxone will work against the hydrocodone content. Mixing Suboxone and Lortab will reduce the analgesic effect and can lead to acute withdrawal too.
Lortab And Methadone
Using Lortab And Methadone together also lead to a major interaction. If they must be used together, one needs to ascertain first the level of tolerance to CNS depression that the patient has developed. Then, hydrocodone can be introduced in minimal doses (say, 20 to 30% of the regular recommended dose) while the patient is still dosing on Methadone. One may also consider reducing the dose of Methadone itself. A patient must be monitored for any signs of respiratory depression or sedation during this period. There might be a need for medical detox if signs of dependency begin to show.
Lortab And Tylenol
Concurrent use of Lortab and Tylenol might not reflect immediate side effects, but prolonged use could lead to a moderate drug interaction. The possible adverse reactions of this interaction include (but are not limited to) renal papillary necrosis, analgesic nephropathy, and end-stage renal disease.
Lortab And Trezix
The active ingredients in Trezix – acetaminophen, caffeine, and dihydrocodeine – can lead to a major interaction when used together if the dosage is not heavily controlled. A maximum of 20 to 30% of the regular recommended dose of Lortab or Trezix is advised until the lowest effective dose is found. Failure to adhere to these guidelines can cause severe side effects such as hypotension, coma, respiratory depression, profound sedation, and death.
Lortab Interactions With Other Drugs
Naproxen And Lortab
Due to the serotonergic properties in opioid drugs, very close monitoring of the dosage schedule is required if Naproxen and Lortab must be used together. Naproxen is a serotonin-receptor agonist, so using both drugs together can increase the risk and severity of serotonin syndrome.
Lortab And Valium
Concurrent use of Valium and Lortab can cause a major drug interaction, leading to side effects such as profound sedation, hypotension, respiratory depression, and even death. If concurrent use is made necessary for patients whom alternative treatment options have proved ineffective, then the absolute minimum effective dose of each drug should be used.
Ambien And Lortab
Ambien contains an opioid agonist (Zolpidem) as an active ingredient, so that concurrent use can lead to side effects such as somnolence, excessive sedation, and complex sleep-related behavior. The patient may be seen to be performing activities such as talking, eating, etc. while not fully awake. If concurrent use is made necessary for patients whom alternative treatment options have proved ineffective, then the absolute minimum effective dose of each drug should be used.
Lortab and Xanax
Xanax is a benzodiazepine; this class of drugs exhibits a major interaction when used concurrently with this opioid. Respiratory depression and death are two of the severe adverse reactions that can happen as a result of combining these drugs together. If the prescription specifies mixing Lortab and Xanax, then the lowest possible doses should be employed and slowly titrated to find the lowest effective dose. Even a dose as low as 7.5 can be too high depending on the strength of the Xanax dosage.
Lortab Interactions With Food And Substances
Lortab And Caffeine
Stimulants are generally to be avoided when using prescription drugs, and coffee is one of the most commonly used stimulants out there. The effects of stimulants on the central nervous system can cause a major interaction when used concurrently, and lead to adverse effects such as respiratory depression.
Lortab And Alcohol
Alcohol is well-known to be ill-advised for patients dosing on most types of medication, and this medicine is no exception. Using alcohol while taking opioids will cause an unnatural spike in the likelihood and severity of adverse effects experienced by the user. Lortab and alcohol are both known to be highly addictive, and if any signs of abuse are noticed, professional addiction treatment is necessary.
Lortab And Grapefruit Juice
Grapefruit Juice is a CYP3A4 inhibitor, so it’s presence in the body can increase the plasma concentrations of hydrocodone if it is used concurrently with the drug. The possible result of this moderate interaction is that hydrocodone-related toxicities in the body are prolonged, increasing the risk of adverse effects and causing them to be exhibited for longer.
Ask A Health Professional Before Mixing Lortab With Other Drugs
A total number of drugs known to cause interactions with lortab is currently 534, and some of them bring severe health risks. The best way to avoid them is stay at prescribed amount and always ask for professional advice when a need of taking other pills appears. Medical doctors can change the prescribed dosage correctly and reveal the possible dangers other medication if there is any.
