What Are Zanaflex Ingredients?

As suggested previously, Zanaflex is a brand name for Tizanidine, which is a white to off-white, fine crystalline powder. The substance itself is typically odorless, with the only semblance of smell being an occasional faint odor. Its chemical name is 5-chloro-4-(2-imidazoline-2-ylamino)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole hydrochloride and its molecular formula is C9H8ClN5S-HCl. Zanaflex is available in capsule and tablet form. The chemical compositions of the two are slightly different.

The former can be found in doses of 2, 4, and 6 mg while the latter is available as 4mg pills for oral use. The capsules contain the active ingredient tizanidine hydrochloride and the inactive ingredients hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, sugar spheres, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, gelatin, and colorants.

The active ingredient in the capsule consists of a 2.29 mg (equivalent to 2 mg) Tizanidine base, 4.58 mg (equivalent to 4 mg) tizanidine base, and 6.87 mg (equivalent to 6 mg) Tizanidine base for the 2, 4, and 6mg doses respectively. It has a short half-life of only about 2.5 hours, which means that the body clears the drug within a few hours.

Similarly, the tablets contain the same active ingredient, but this time with a 4.58 mg (equivalent to 4 mg) Zanaflex base, and the inactive ingredients stearic acid, silicon dioxide colloidal, anhydrous lactose, and microcrystalline cellulose.

Zanaflex is classified as a type of central alpha-2-adrenergic agonist. The product is primarily indicated for managing and relieving a clinical symptom known as spasticity. This is why the drug is mainly classified as a muscle relaxant medication.
