Since 2002, this facility has been offering inpatient treatment to men and women who deal with dependency. Located in Plymouth, New Hampshire, this treatment center is known for implementing a 12-step based residential treatment, structured program and quality care. This approach helped numerous people to overcome their addiction, remain sober and enjoy full, productive lives.
The Plymouth House: Treatments, Programs and Staff
Prior to admission, an initial telephone interview is required, in order to asses the future clients’ health status, medication and special dietary requirements. Also, all clients must be sober and clean for a minimum of 72 hours and have already undergone (or not need) medical detoxification.
The minimum required length of stay is two weeks, but it typically varies between three and five weeks.
Since the 12-step philosophy is the core value of the Plymouth House policy, this approach is implemented throughout the whole treatment. Clients with co-occurring disorders do not receive mental health support, and Plymouth House does not work with any health care providers.
Meditation, goal setting groups, Big Book study groups, inventory work, daily 12-step meetings, yoga, exercise and comprehensive 12-step work are all part of the weekly curriculum. As for the typical daily schedule, it includes an optional breakfast, from 6:30 to 8:15 am, followed by optional yoga class. Some clients participate in goals group, followed by meditation. Reflections group takes place at 9:15 am, followed by two Big Book groups. The lunch is served at noon, and a guest-led group is scheduled from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
The second Big Book group, assigned only to some clients, is held from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Meanwhile, others may attend optional inventory workshop or spend time in the lounge and work on fellowship, make phone calls or exercise in the gym. The afternoon is reserved for hiking, from 3:45 pm to 5:15 pm. After dinner, clients attend an outside 12-step meeting. Wrap-up starts at 10 pm, and the lights go of at 11:30 pm.
The entire staff includes 12-step practitioners, men and women who are in a long-term recovery. The client to staff ratio is almost one to one.
Facilities and Extras
This treatment center looks a lot like a boarding school. The entire campus occupies over 6 acres in a rural setting, south of the White Mountains. The facility includes a modern dining area, state-of-the-art kitchen, non-denominational chapel, men’s and women’s lounges, comfortable common meeting areas, library, laundry facility, vegetable garden, walking paths, yoga studio, fitness room.
The Plymouth House accommodates 39 clients. The dorms are gender-specific, and the furnished, rustic-like bedrooms accommodate two or three clients. Each suite comes with a bathroom and a private porch.
Healthy meals are served three times a day. Although the breakfast is optional, clients must attend lunch and dinner. The typical menu includes grilled chicken, salad and fresh veggies right from the garden.
Weekly alumni meetings are held at 7 pm on Wednesdays and 9:30 am on Saturdays, in the premises.

Those who are not coming directly from detox, must have a certification from a doctor which says they are medically stable and detoxed.
There is a list of restricted items every resident must follow. Some of the items in this list include cellphones, laptops and any other electronic device which supports internet connection, nail polish, hair dyes, diet scales, pocket knives, colognes, perfumes, etc.
Although laundry services and detergent are provided, clients are asked to bring a supply of quarters. No more than $30 is allowed. The Plymouth House has the right to search for any forbidden items, confiscate and store them in the main office until release date. The staff goes to store purchasing on Mondays and Fridays.

The Plymouth House is not a typical treatment center. It is not intended for those who suffer from co-occurring disorders or in need for more clinical support. However, Big Book aficionados are on the right place. The tranquil setting, relaxing activities and complete 12-step implementation make this facility a life saver for many of its clients.
