Viibryd is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder but also used off label for other conditions. Viibryd doses can vary based on the reason for treatment and the individual needs of the patient. Here is what all users need to know about Viibryd dosing.

Viibryd Dosage Forms And Strengths
Vilazodone (Viibryd) is not yet available in generic form, which means there is just one manufacturer creating the pills at the moment. As a result, there is not much variation in the pills. All are tablets and oval in shape. Only immediate-release, film-coated pills are currently available. Vilazodone dosages can involve 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg pills. Below is a chart clarifying what vilazodone pill dose might look like.
|Viibryd 10mg||Pink||“10” on one side|
|Viibryd 20mg||Orange||“20” on one side|
|Viibryd 40mg||Blue||“40” on one side|
Viibryd Starter Pack
When patients have firstly prescribed vilazodone HCL tablets, they are typically prescribed something called the Viibryd starter kit. This is a packaged medication that includes 10mg vilazodone pills and 20mg vilazodone tablets. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe a bundle that includes a dosage of 40mg pills as well.
Viibryd Starter Pack configurations
|Package configurations||Tablets strength & Amount|
|Starter kit package of 2-dosage tablets||10mg – 7 tablets
20mg – 23 tablets
|Starter kit package of 3-dosage tablets||10mg – 7 tablets
20mg – 7 tablets
40mg – 16 tablets
The idea here is that the dosage will be titrated – steadily increased – as the patient adjusts to the current vilazodone dose they are taking. While it is acceptable for a patient to start and stop at 10mg dose, most will need to get up to at least 20mg dose to treat their condition. Doctors and patients alike may find that relying on the starter kit over multiple prescriptions is easiest.
Can Viibryd Be Cut In Half?
Some patients may be curious about if they can cut their vilazodone HCL tablets in half. In some cases, patients look into this because they dislike the side effects of Viibryd when taken at a full dose. For others, they might be looking to make their prescription stretch further due to vilazodone cost.
Vilazodone dose is not available in a time-release formula, and it is not coated in a way that would interfere with cutting the tablets in half. However, patients should consult with their doctor before attempting this. It is possible that there are other factors to consider that would make this a poor decision.
Viibryd Dosage For Major Depressive Disorder
Given that the only FDA-approved use of vilazodone is the treatment of major depressive disorder, this is also the only application for which there is an official dosing guide. The suggested target dose for vilazodone is 20mg to 40mg per day. However, this is not where patients should start.
All patients should start with a dose of 10mg of vilazodone taken once per day with food. After seven days, this can be increased to a 20mg dose taken once per day with food.
After 22 days, the prescribing doctor might increase the dosage to 40mg taken once per day with food, though in rare cases, they could make this increase after just seven days on 20mg pills. The maximum vilazodone dose that can be prescribed is 80mg dose taken once per day with food.
Viibryd Dosing Considerations
When dosing vilazodone, doctors have to consider anything about the patient that might make them a special case. For example, pediatric patients are not supposed to be prescribed Viibryd. This is because the safety and efficacy of the drug in any doses in children have not been studied. The same is true for use in geriatric patients.
For those with renal impairment, there are no dosage adjustments recommended. Patients with hepatic impairment should dose the drug with extreme caution and consider alternatives with their doctor if needed. If it is decided that vilazodone is best, users should take the lowest dose possible.
Viibryd Dosing Adjustments
In addition to taking great care with specific populations, vilazodone doses might need to be adjusted based on other medications currently being used or that were used in the recent past. Of particular concern are MAOIs and CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers.
Switching To Or From An MAOI
Both MAOIs and SSRIs, like vilazodone, impact the amount of serotonin in the brain. Specifically, the vilazodone mechanism of action selectively prevents its reuptake. When the two types of medications are taken too close together, it can result in a condition called serotonin syndrome, which is deadly.
Patients switching from an MAOI to an SSRI like vilazodone should take a minimum of a two-week break between medications.
CYP3A4 Inhibitors Or Inducers Concurrent Use
If someone is taking a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, the daily vilazodone dose should not exceed 20mg per day. It should be left up to the prescribing doctor to determine if the CYP3A4 inhibitor is considered strong or not. For those taking strong CYP3A4 inducers, it is suggested that the dose of vilazodone be doubled, so long as it does not exceed 80mg in a day. Again, it is up to the prescribing doctor to decide if it is strong or not.
The LD50 is the dose of a medication that, if taken, would likely kill 50 percent of the population. The vilazodone LD50 has not been studied in humans. However, it has been determined in studies on mice, rats, and rabbits. In these studies, the lowest dose that reached the LD50 requirements was 2,000mg per kilogram in rabbits. For the average U.S. adult male, this would equal an LD50 of 176,000 in a day. However, this should not be used as a guide to determine what is and is not safe.
Can One Overdose On Viibryd
As with any other medication, Viibryd overdose is possible. In most cases, an overdose is unintentional, when a patient takes more than prescribed (exceeding the maximum daily dose) to manage the symptoms faster. It also can be a result of a missed dose, when a patient takes a double one; or if a patient forgets when the last dose has been taken. No matter the reason, Viibryd overdose may be uncomfortable.
Users should be mindful of the signs of a vilazodone overdose, which include:
- Blurred vision
- Dilated pupils
- Lack of motor control
- Changes in respiration
- Rapid or very slow heartbeat
A Viibryd overdose can occur at a lower dose when other medications or substances are used at the same time. These can include prescription medications, street drugs, and even alcohol. Since it is unlikely that someone would not be using any other medications or supplements while on vilazodone, it should be assumed that the threshold for vilazodone overdose is actually much lower. Additionally, the overall health of the patient and their unique attributes could result in overdosing on a relatively small amount of the drug, as could taking it in an unauthorized manner, such as snorting.
Should someone experience an overdose on vilazodone, they and those around them should seek emergency medical attention at once.
Beating Viibryd Addiction
Dosing information is critical to know when taking vilazodone. Viibryd overdose is rare, but it is still possible. There are those who abuse the medication and become addicted. With the right help from a drug rehab center, it is possible to stop misuse and live a sober life. The addiction treatment in such facilities provides a high level of care.
