Lisinopril use is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hypertension. In the US, close to half a million deaths in 2017, according to CDC, were due to high blood pressure, either as a primary cause or as a contributing factor. What Is Lisinopril Used For?
There are several Lisinopril uses approved by the FDA and a number of reasons why a physician may prescribe it for off-label uses. Lisinopril For High Blood Pressure
First of all, Lisinopril is used for treating blood pressure. It belongs to a class of drugs called Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme Inhibitor, or ACE inhibitor for short. It appears that more rapid onset of kidney failure is among the long term side effects of Lisinopril use, particularly among patients in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease.
Lisinopril For Diabetes
Lisinopril use for diabetes has to do with slowing down kidney deterioration, as supported by the study conducted by Goa, et.al. Lisinopril and diabetes management work to protect the kidneys by improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin. In effect, metabolism of sugar is improved, making the energy stored in sugar available for use by the body.

These findings led the researchers to recommend decreasing the dose of ACE inhibitors proportionately with the degree of damage to renal function.
Lisinopril For Anxiety
Although not typically prescribed, Lisinopril for anxiety may be an identified use of this drug among those who abuse prescription medications. Zestril, however, does not commonly associated with drug abuse. Rather than a condition of what Lisinopril is used to treat, anxiety is, in fact, one of several side effects related to Lisinopril use.
Is Prinivil Used For Off-Label Reasons?
A study by Sadat-Ebrahimi, et.al found 24 off-label uses for Zestril. The researchers concluded that Prinivil use for diabetic nephropathy performed better than other standard medications, particularly in protecting the kidneys.
Another conclusion drawn from this study showed that Lisinopril dosages performed well in addressing the following conditions: migraine, myocardial fibrosis, diabetes prevention, diabetic retinopathy, cardiomyopathy in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, mitral valve regurgitation, oligospermia, and infertility.
In relation to hypertension, off-label Prinivil uses prescribed by trained medical professionals include the following:
- Address problems concerning Congestive Heart Failure. Lisinopril use for treating this condition works by inhibiting the production of Angiotensin II, which causes blood vessels to contract. In effect, it aids the heart in pumping oxygenated blood more efficiently, and blood is able to flow more freely and smoothly as a result.
- Improve recovery after suffering from a heart attack. MedlinePlus cites that Zestril is commonly used to improve patient survival following a heart attack. The benefits of Prinivil and Zestril uses in these circumstances are attributed to the action of these drugs in lowering the strain on the heart when pumping blood while simultaneously increasing blood flow to the heart muscles.
However, based on a guide prepared by the John M. Eisenberg Center for Clinical Decisions and Communication Science, adding an ACE inhibitor to other medicines for heart disease will have negligible incremental benefits in terms of life expectancy. According to the researcher’s findings, only “1 additional person out of every 100 people will avoid dying of a heart attack or heart failure” when an ACE inhibitor is added to their regimen compared to those who do not add any drug from this drug class.
The FDA has approved Lisinopril uses among adult patients as well as in children at least six years old. This modification is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is also contraindicated for use among patients who meet the following criteria:
- History of allergic reactions to ACE inhibitors.
- History of angioedema, whether due to ACE inhibitors or not.
- History of blood problem, including low blood count of white blood cells
- History of hypotension.
- Patients who have been diagnosed with renal impairment or undergoing dialysis.
- Patients who are scheduled for surgery, including dental surgery, most especially when general anesthesia will be used.
Take precautions when using Zestril together with other drugs. It is best to consult with a physician, most notably when both drugs will be used frequently or over the long term. For example, using Lisinopril and Ibuprofen at the same time may reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect of Prinivil.
Is Lisinopril A Water Pill? Also, notice that it is not a “water pill” or diuretic. People who need more help to reach and maintain their ideal blood pressure may benefit from combining this drug with a diuretic called Hydrochlorothiazide.
