Adderall is a generic name for Amphetamine mixed salts used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The main ingredients, which produce these effects are amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. They are in fact central nervous system stimulants, which affect the brain’s release of chemicals that cause hyperactivity and impulsive reaction. Some other, off-label benefits include managing sleep disorder and severe depression.

Students often are the ones who abuse Adderall as a “study drug,” a “crash diet drug” or a “party drug” due to its serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine-increasing effects. The University of Kentucky performed research on substance abuse among students, where results showed that 30% of students abused ADHD medications such as Adderall.

    How Can Adderall Be Consumed?

This medicine is available in the form of tablet and capsule. Dosage varies and can the pills be recognized by their different shapes, colors, and sizes. Adderall can be prescribed in immediate-release (IR) or extended release (ER) form.

Adderall can be smoked, injected or snorted. The latter is the most favored method of intake because this way the drug avoids the gastrointestinal tract, i.e. digestion is bypassed and a faster response of the body is promoted.

When snorted, Adderall absorbs through the nasal mucous membrane and quickly transmits through the blood-brain barrier. Adderall’s potential to enter the bloodstream very fast is high, which produces much stronger and sudden effects.

The brain then becomes overwhelmed by this substance and doesn’t have the time to break it down safely.

The brain responds in the form of seizures, increased heart rate, fever, psychosis and general confusion. Adderall overdose can lead to a stroke, heart attack or even death.
