100 years ago Dr. Emory Brody recognized a need to design a special treatment program in Colorado for people who have experienced trauma, so he founded Cedar Springs Hospital. Today, the center provides treatment services for clients with mental health problems and substance abuse issues.
Cedar Springs Hospital: Treatments, Programs, and Staff
The first step in the recovery process is medically supervised detox. During this phase, patients are constantly monitored. They are also not obliged to participate in the treatment until the drug is completely out of their system.
The center provides short-term residential treatment which means that the rehabilitation usually lasts 28 days. However, if needed, this period can be prolonged. For patients with dual-diagnosis, an additional case manager is assigned, and a psychiatrist can provide medication management services.
The Recovery Zone is a program specially designed for male and female soldiers dealing with depression, PTSD, and addiction. The primary goal is for patients to stabilize so they can return to lead healthy civilian lives.
Treatment modalities are mostly evidence-based, and they include cognitive-behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. Some of the holistic methods such as EMDR and equine therapy are also used in the Cedar Springs Hospital.
Intensive Outpatient Program for Adults is designed for clients who need to continue with their work and other daily activities while recovering. The program includes:
- Individual meetings with a psychiatrist
- Group counseling sessions
- Medication Management
- Case Management
- Comprehensive Discharge Plan
The staff of the hospital consists of trained nurses, psychiatrists, doctors, therapists, and counselors.
The staff emphasizes the importance of family involvement in the recovery process. Therefore, family therapy sessions are held once a week. Clients can also enjoy in recreational and fitness activities, weekly outings (bowling, hiking, movie night, and fishing), playing basketball, volleyball or chess; or they can simply relax and watch TV.
The center provides a partial hospitalization program for clients who do not need a 24-hour supervision. Those individuals visit the hospital on a daily basis from 9AM to 3PM and participate in all therapeutic activities along with other residents.
Virtual Reality-Assisted Cue Therapy helps patients experience potential drug use triggers and learn how to avoid them and modify their behavior.
Cedar Springs Hospital: Facilities and Extras
The hospital has the capacity to accommodate 110 patients. There are two facilities for inpatient treatment of substance abuse – New Choices and The Recovery Zone. The Recovery Zone provides a unique treatment program for soldiers dealing with addiction issues.
